Something for the WeekendSomething For the Weekend / Radio Stars

Formed in the Seventies, and disbanded before the end of that decade for dental reasons, Radio Stars emerged from the tail-end of glam to seize the punk reins with abandon, albeit without the po-faced rigidity of their peers. Writer/bassist Martin Gordon was in Sparks during the Kimono My House era, and then formed Jet with former John's Children singer Andy Ellison. Jet became Radio Stars, and their first Radio Stars single ‘Dirty Pictures' was championed by John Peel; their first EP, inspired by Germans and entitled ‘Stop It', contained two tunes which were to become legendary live favourites, ‘No Russians in Russia' and ‘Johnny Mekon'. Their first album ‘Songs For Swinging Lovers' was described as 'sticking out from the fetid morass of garage bands on fly-by-night labels like Nureyev's whatsit through his leotard' , which seems to sum it up rather well.

They toured endlessly, audiences invaded the stage, they even had hits and gained critical acclaim. Tickets for the shows were printed with the slogan ‘No riff-raff' - no matter, the riff-raff turned up in droves, eager to get an earful of the band and an eyeful of Gordon's 'glamour model' (oh, yes, we all know what that means...) girlfriend who stood obtrusively at the side of the stage. Their second album, ‘Holiday Album' contained equal amounts of pop gems for grown-ups, but the writing was on the wall, and molars were being ground down. Exhausted by touring continuously, the band broke up and reformed the following day without bassist/writer Martin Gordon. The rest is history.

Now here they are in their natural environment - live in 1977. Dave Thompson writes the intimate liner notes, frankly-unclad picture of Kelly St John are included for eager naturalists, bonus tracks of previously unreleased studio recordings are included, and no suicide bombings are to be heard anywhere. Well, only slightly.

Hello Boston! / Martin Gordon Hello Boston!

Encouraged by various inhabitants of Boston during the summer of 2007, Martin Gordon and Pelle Almgren embarked upon the long voyage. The multi-rigged clipper that was their means of transport rounded the Horn of Africa in late February. Landfall was achieved in August, just in time to perform for the burgers, fishermen (and others) of Boston on the 2nd. It was Gordon's professional debut as a performing artist, despite having done this for over thirty years. Well, it's not good to flood the market, you see. Leave them wanting more was always his considered motto. Along with vocalist Pelle Almgren and Boston band Tristan Da Cunha, this is a live soundboard recording from the evening. It is only available with the 1,000 copies of the Radio Stars album ‘Something For the Weekend'. But it IS free, so it seems like a reasonable arrangement, all things considered. It has been, as ever, painstakingly mastered and fiddled with and, in a twist worthy of Marshall McLuhan himself (ride 'em, e-cowboy!), this bonus CD also includes a bonus track from the radio broadcast that our brave sailors made on or around that date. This collection will not be released on CD except as a bonus disc to the first 1000 copies of the Radio Stars release. Phew.
